Meta has decided to shut down its Messenger Lite app, which was first launched in 2016. Developed for entry-level and older Android phones, this version offered the basic features of the messaging app. Support for Messenger Lite, which takes up much less storage space, will end in September.

Messenger Lite will be shut down in September

Messenger Lite was launched about 7 years ago as a lightweight messaging app for older Android phones with limited storage and performance power. It took up less space than the standard app and allowed users to chat.

The app’s features included basic messaging capabilities such as texting, photo sharing and group chats. Over time, it became available for all phones and remained popular among users for its simplicity and performance.

Facebook renames Watch to Video, adds new features

Facebook's latest update renames 'Watch' tab to 'Video,' introducing editing tools for reels, improved audio features.

However, Meta is retiring the Lite app, taking into account the performance of today’s smartphones. Announcing that it will shut down the app on September 18, the company also shared a message directing users to Messenger.

The social media giant stated that the transition will be gradual. Accordingly, all conversations in Lite will also be accessible in the Messenger app.

The main reasons for canceling the app include the declining usage of Lite and the increasing power of new smartphones. Most phones can now run the Messenger app seamlessly. This eliminates the need for a lightweight app.

However, Facebook Lite and Instagram Lite are still available in the Play Store. So what do you think about this issue? Don’t forget to share your opinions with us in the comments section!
